In any of the five matches that Auger-Aliassime competed in while in Basel, he had no opposition that was able to score a single break point against him.

After winning in Florence, Italy, and Antwerp, Belgium, Auger-third Aliassime was able to extend his winning streak to three consecutive weeks with his triumph in Basel. As of right now, he has won 13 games in a row.

Roger Federer, the great Swiss player, was scheduled to make his competitive return at the tournament that was being hosted in his home nation of Switzerland on the same day that the Canadian player, who is 22 years old, would be celebrating his birthday.

Federer announced his retirement from tennis a month ago, at the age of 41, citing ongoing knee troubles as the reason.

“I thought about him this morning and thought how fantastic it would be if I won here, where he won 10 times,” said Auger-Aliassime. “I thought how wonderful it would be if I won here, where he won 10 times.”

Swiss Indoors Champions Have Won The US Open Since 2006

Every single winner of the Swiss Indoors tournament since 2006 has also taken home the trophy in the US Open. It was necessary for Marin ili, Juan Martin del Potro, and Novak Djokovic to triumph against Federer in their respective championship matches.

“I’m very far from that,” said Auger-Aliassime after he progressed to the finals of the US Open by beating the player with the highest ranking in the tournament, Carlos Alcaraz, on Saturday. “I’m very far from that,” Auger-Aliassime remarked.

Auger-Aliassime and Rune, the younger of the two players at 19, have the same combined age as Federer, who is 41.

On Monday, Rune will be ranked for the first time anywhere within the top 20, even though his record in finals is now 2-2.

This year, Auger-Aliassime improved his career finals record to 4-9. This was accomplished by winning four titles on indoor hard courts in Europe.

It was the first time this week that unseeded Rune’s service was broken, and the third-seeded right-hander took advantage of his single break-point opportunity to grab a 3-1 lead in the first set. He then broke Rune’s serve again to take a 6-5 lead in the second set.

At a crucial moment in the 11th game, Rune was sidetracked by the pulsating lights of the court-wide advertising boards behind his opponent, which briefly went out as he aimed his shot and then came back on.

Finishing Line

When the point was over, Rune questioned the chair umpire, Mohamed Lahyani, about the screen glitch. Lahyani had not seen it. Rune’s service was interrupted, and in response, he resumed the conversation at the changeover by spewing a string of expletives.

A microphone placed along the side of the court captured Lahyani saying to Rune, “I don’t want these types of remarks,” before asking the Danish adolescent to show respect for his opponent.

Auger-Aliassime did not seem to be bothered by the argument, and he soon won the match after gaining his third match point when Rune hit his forehand too far off of the court.
